Every year, the Legal Services of New Jersey (LSNJ) recognizes, honors and celebrates extraordinary pro bono contributors and attorney Joel R. Spivack has received the Legal Services of New Jersey 2019 Equal Justice Medal. The medal is in recognition and appreciation of major pro bono contributions to low-income clients referred by LSNJ’s programs.
LSNJ consists of a network of 6 independent not-for-profit corporations coordinating and supporting the statewide network and providing legal representation and advocacy. The many hours of pro bono work done by award recipients secure greater justice for financially disadvantaged New Jersey residents.
Unfortunately, for over 90% of the civil legal problems that will face lower-income New Jersey residents this year, no attorney will be available. For more than 50 years, LSNJ’s system has provided representation in nearly 2.5 million cases, on behalf of approximately 9 million people, and assisted millions more with information offered through its websites, publications, and community presentations.
Confronted with a pervasive denial of equal justice in civil legal matters for those who cannot afford attorneys, during their Equal Justice Awards Reception LSNJ celebrates the efforts of the volunteer lawyers who advance justice and fairness and honor them for their essential offerings to the daily work of the organization.
Mr. Spivack has been doing pro bono bankruptcies with the Rutgers Pro Bono Bankruptcy Project for over 10 years and comments “I am grateful to be awarded the 2019 Equal Justice Medal and to join past recipients. It is an honor to be recognized for my contributions to a remarkable and significant organization that fights against the denial of justice. On behalf of our entire team, we have high regard for the opportunity to help the financially distressed people who would not otherwise have access to the courts due to their low income.”
